These terms cover Media Terminal: this website and the adverse media API at https://media.unbackoffice.com. Media Terminal is run by unbackoffice ("we", "us"). By running a search, signing in or using a key, you agree to them.

1. Who can use it

• Media Terminal is for business use only: customer and counterparty due diligence, anti-money-laundering, sanctions and fraud checks, and similar compliance and risk work.
• Sign in with your own work Google account. One account per person. Some invite codes also accept personal Google accounts.
• If you use it for an organisation, you confirm you may accept these terms for it.

2. Free searches, keys and referrals

• Before signing in, you can run 5 searches on this site. They show the risk level and the kinds of adverse media found, but not the articles. We limit them per visitor and per network.
• When you first sign in, your key comes with 10 free searches. One search is one name; a vessel or port search counts as two. Searches you run on this site while signed in use searches from your keys.
• When a new person signs up through your referral link and gets their free searches, we add 10 searches to your key. Each person counts once, for the first link they signed up through. We limit how many referrals one account is rewarded for.
• Invite codes: we give some people a code to share. A new account that signs up with a valid code starts with the number of free searches the code gives instead. One code per account, for new sign-ups only. A code can have a limit on sign-ups or an end date, and we can end it at any time.
• Referring yourself, or creating extra accounts to collect searches, is not allowed. Searches gained that way can be removed.
• We limit how many free keys one company can hold.
• A search that fails to run is given back, up to a few times a day per key.
• Free searches have no cash value. We may change or end the free offer at any time. Searches already on an issued key stay usable unless the key is revoked under section 8.

3. Paid searches

You can buy more searches by requesting a tier on the tiers page. We contact you, confirm the price and send an invoice. We add the searches to your key once the invoice is paid. Searches you buy don't expire. Anything we agree in writing for a purchase applies on top of these terms.

4. Your key

• Keep your key secret. Use it from your own server, never in a browser or app that others can inspect.
• You are responsible for all use of your key. If it leaks, tell us and we will revoke it.
• A key works only for adverse media searches (POST /v1/adverse-media).

5. People you search

A search on a person processes personal data about them, which can include reports of alleged offences. You decide whom to search and why, and you are responsible for that decision. You must:

• have a lawful basis to search the person, such as a legal duty to carry out customer due diligence, and a genuine business reason;
• tell the people you check, in your own privacy notice, that you screen them against media sources;
• search only what you need for that purpose.

For the searches you run on your customers and counterparties, we act as your processor. If you need a data processing agreement, ask us.

6. Acceptable use

You must not use Media Terminal to:

• decide on anyone's employment, credit, insurance or housing, or for any other purpose for which a consumer report or background check is regulated. Media Terminal is not a consumer reporting agency;
• stalk, harass, track or profile people, or search private individuals out of curiosity;
• build or resell a database of people, or republish the results;
• share or publish keys, use another person's account, or get around rate limits, quotas or key scopes;
• probe, disrupt or attack the service.

7. Results

• A result points to published news and web coverage. We do not check whether what an article reports is true, and an allegation is not a finding of guilt.
• Matching coverage to a person is automated and can be wrong: it can link a namesake, or miss coverage about the person. A search covers recent online coverage only; none means nothing was found in that search, not that nothing exists.
• Read the articles behind a hit before you act on it. Do not make a decision with legal or similarly significant effect on a person based only on a result. Give the person a chance to explain where your rules require it.
• You stay responsible for your own legal and regulatory obligations. We do not give legal advice.

8. Suspension and ending

We may limit, suspend or revoke a key or account if you break these terms, if we see abuse or a security risk, or if the law requires it. Where we reasonably can, we will tell you first. You can stop using Media Terminal at any time and ask us to close your account.

9. Ownership

We own Media Terminal and its software. The articles belong to their publishers: we show headlines, short summaries and links, and you follow the link to read the article. You may use the results for your own due diligence and compliance work.

10. No guarantee

Media Terminal is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise it will be uninterrupted, error free, complete or fit for a particular purpose. We may change the API or the service. We will try to give notice of changes that break existing integrations.

11. Liability

• We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for lost profits, revenue, data or goodwill.
• Our total liability to you in any 12 months is limited to what you paid us in those 12 months, or EUR 100 if you paid nothing.
• Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as for fraud.

12. Privacy

Our privacy notice explains what we collect and why.

13. Changes

We may update these terms. The date above shows the latest version. If a change is significant, we will say so on this site. Using Media Terminal after a change means you accept it.

14. Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Cyprus, and its courts have jurisdiction. This does not take away rights you have under the law of the country where you live.
